Oil question

My car is on about 9500km's and has only had the 1500km service. Now, I wasnt aware of a 7500km service?? Well Ive missed that one, but September is my 1 year service and I want to buy a seperate oil to get put in during the service. What I want to ask is, should i go for semi or full synthetic??

Your call mate. I went full synthetic at the 15,000km/1 year service. Some others did not. No real reason for me to change at this service, I just did it on impulse.

Fully synthetic is supposed to be better for ur engine, altho it is a little bit more expensive, as exaltd said it's really up to u, as long as u get the right oil weight, it all come down to how much u want to spend

You will probably find most dealership already use a semi synthetic in most cars anyway. If not ask for one. They will have some on site.

That is all you really need. If you get oil changes done every 5-7500km then you are just throwing away extra money on a fully synthetic.
Everyone has their own opinion based largely, I have found on how much BS and oil company marketing they buy into. The marketing is fierce.

Every ones brand is better than everyone elses, has diff additives etc etc.
I never bought into the hype.

I've had 2 Mitsu turbo cars I had for over 10years each and nearly 90-100 000KM and I used a semi syn in both. Never had an engine problem. More important to get regular oil changes based on your driving patterns rather than spending more on each change unnecessarily.

You will never know/notice the difference when driving. Synthetics will offer more thermal stability in racing and extreme engine operating conditions but are not needed in ordinary driving. IMHO.

Do a search and you will see numerous threads where I have provided links and info and many swear by how much they spent on brand X or Y or Z fully synthetic.
If you are happy spending the extra money on 5 L of super duper brand X fully syn as opposed to a semi syn the dealer uses go for it by all means.

Btw tomtom, u don't need to do a service every 7500km, the intervals are 15000km/1 year, if they tell u u have to do it sooner then they are just trying to screw you for more money. Also always check ur service sticker after a service and make sure they have the interval right, last car I had they kept trying to creep the interval times down, I always wrote the right ks over it. Good luck with what ever u decide to do oil wise

I like Aussie's reply... Honestly we barrack for oil, like we do footy teams.. I put in full synthetic, each 5,000km, simply because I can afford it...

Others would suggest wasteful.... Etc etc

Like was mentioned, do the minimum based upon the service guide and anything extra to your needs and proclivities...

I use Castrol Magnatec. However next service I will be supplying my own Magnatec as the dealer charged me $70.00 for 4.3L of Magnatec at the last service.Definitely a rip off as they buy in bulk and I can get Magnatec at Supercheap for around $32.00/5L [less on special].

true but depends when you bought the car. If i bought a 2nd hand lancer and didnt know its history,then i may change the oil from 5000-7500 kms.
I bought mine brand new,the book sais every 15,000 so im sticking to that. If something happens to the motor as a result that the oil changes are to far apart,then warranty will cover that,as im going strickly by the book. chances are i will change the car before warranty runs out,going by my car history,i avg a car change every 2-3 years lol. novelty runs out pretty quickly for me

All engines burn oil. They are designed to do so. Carbons from burnt fuel and other impurities will mix with the oil, keeping the level often at an acceptable level.

If you tested your oil you may be surprised what is it after a while.

Cheapest insurance to keep our cars running for a long time is to change all fluids regularly. No need for expensive brands and higher grades fluids. Just stick to recommended.

The service manual requires N/A engines require oil change every 15,000 kilometres.

Dont get confused with the our service manual that has oil changes more regularly for turbo engines only.
