Had a golf in the UK and fancy something different. Noted your post on the i30 and am not drawn to it at all.
The GT-A would be great for Bec, softer suspension, more subtle styling, semi auto -yet still fun for me to borrow.
Also found a m int purple Legnum VR4. She is looking at them both today

Suzuki:
Swift (Sport)
SX4
Mazda:
CX7
RX8
Toyota:
Yaris

Lexus of some sorts? Self parking one for the missus? (Yes, that was probably sexist....)
BMW:
X-series (4x4)
Z-series (Sport)
1-series (the hatchbacks)

but if your still looking at SUV/4x4 you could also consider the Suzuki Vitara, you can get it in a 3door or 5door or even the outlander if its not too big.
HOGGY i'd be straight there to get a ES Sportback buddy....lol

go the new sportsback lancer too =D
Like all honda's wait until you need to buy parts for them
NRMA crash tested all the smalll cars a few years back at 10kph into a wall. bit over $2000 to repair a corolla or over $8000 to repair a Honda Civic....like wtf thats almost half the car's value

i30 diesel gets great reviews and its frugality is crazy, on the open road across australia they can get down to like 3.5L/100km.... I love the blue they come in to. The interior in them looks a bit tacky but really so does ours and I dont think the dash is what makes a car Why did I get a CJ though you ask? Because at the time the diesel i30 had no cruise control!!
