LED SMD replacements for interior lights

n00bish question here.
I'm considering chaging out my incadescent map and room lights for LEDs.
Whilst I popped the lens to check how much room I may / may not have for a 16 LED replacement - I noted on the light receptecals was stamped 12V 8W.
This got me thinking as the replacement LED SMD stated 16W.
According to the fuse the interior lamps fuse is rated at 15A.
Why this 8W limit? Is it a real limit or just a heat load limit so no more powerful incadescent is placed in there that might melt the plastic??!?
Will sticking 3 x 16W LED replacements be a problem. Actually make that possibly 4 as I will be doing the boot.

for my dome light I have a 16 LED replacement, it can get hot if it's left on for a while but so far no problems with the plastic.
two 6LED for map lights aswell.

Longest I've had my dome light on at any one time is probably 30 minutes or so, and I changed that light the second day I had my car

Using some adhesive tape to stick it to the "roof" would avoid contact with the plastic also, which may help

As per tarquin's post http://clubcj.net/viewtopic.php?p=13583#13583 - I only by chance noticed that of my 16 LED replacement - stays on every so slightly. I turned off the engine, whilst looking for a receipt in my wallet and the light dimmed out, so as i looked up to switch it from "door" to "on" position I noticed the glow. I popped the lens off and out of the 16 leds, 4 are every so slightly lit up, with only 1 of those 4 a tad brighter than the others.

Seems this is "normal" as they'd be enough resistance in the original filament bulb and not enough current to light it up, but would that current still flow? I'll have to stick a multimeter across to see what current draw there is with the LED.

One thing I did note, if I flicked to "OFF" it would go completely off. The switch seems to disconnect from the power.

I'll have to at some stage wait 30 mins and see if the car completely cuts out the current with it's usual ETACS 30mins cut off for interior lights left on.

I've had these LEDs in for a week now, not had a problem with power. I'd imagine the car battery would have constant current draw with all the various electronics in the car, ETACS, immobiliser, KOS, etc so I'm not too concerned, just seems a stupid Mitsubishi design to let current flow, when ETACS is supposed to cut it out.

Why did you want LED interior lights? Are you getting a "brighter" interior? The reason I'm asking is I need to find a way to get some light in the rear seats and this might be a solution.

I wanted brighter for the boot, for the rear plates, and some blue LEDs for the map lights. I only got the dome light because, I could as I was ordering a heap of LEDs anyway. However, yes it is brighter and provides ample more light to the rear passenger seats.
I'll post up some before/after photos in my garage this week as I'm still waiting on my blue LEDs for the map lights.

I've tried a few different types and style of interior festoon globes in the past and found the SMD ( Surface Mount Diode ) type to be the best. They're the brightest, have a wider dispersion angle, last much longer, use less power and the least heat dissipation of all.

I purchased mine from Jaycar Electronics who source them from a electronics wholesale supplier called Electus.
Single sided, 120 degree view angle.
They're available in 3 sizes:
31mm ZD-0484 $12.95
36mm ZD-0486 $12.95
41mm ZD-0484 $14.95

They're also available from Bright Lights Auto Parts

These however are double sided SMD's (twice as many diodes) 360 degree view angle, and different colors.
They're available in 4 sizes:
31mm 31F8 SMD 1P $7.50
36mm 36F8 SMD 1P $7.60
39mm 39F12 SMD 1P $9.00
43mm 43F12 SMD 1P $9.10

The single sided ones from Jaycar are more suitable for map and roof light applications, since you only need to disperse light downward.
And they don't disperse the typical blueish LED luminescence.

Here are some quickies;
Boot - stock 28mm festoon type incandescent bulb

Boot - with 16 LED SMD "xenon white" (single sided) replacement.



Map lights - replaced with blue 6 LED SMD (single sided)




Cabin light - replaced with 16 LED SMD "xenon white" (single sided)



Rear plates - replaced with 5 LED SMD "xenon white" (multi sided)

Left Side new 5 LED SMD, right side still old bulb for comparison

The 16 LED SMD got from a local supplier via ebay, had the LEDs within a day or two. Standard disclaimer, have nothing to do with the ebay seller, do not endorse them, here is the link to the ebay store. http://stores.shop.ebay.com.au/mega-mobii__W0QQ_armrsZ1 This store has heaps of LEDs in various configurations.
Word of warning re: the plate lamps, I tried to go for the 9 LED SMD - but it was too long and could not fit the lens cover back on, so had to go for the 5 LED SMD, which are shorter as they only have 1 LED on each face as opposed to 2 LED on each face.

I hope I've not broken any forum rules by linking to the ebay store.

As for the 6 LED SMD, used a different seller, the blue ones came from china. Took about a week to get to me.

Tho I must admit the novelty of blue lights when opening the door has worn off, matches the blue floor illumination tho.
However I can always switch and use the white cabin light instead.

LOLz. I switched back to the main cabin light (xenon white). Back to the blues again. It does look nice.
