... change the oil immediately!

Get synthetic and experience optimum efficiency from Day 1. Mitsubishi disappointingly uses sh!t oil which saw me using almost 1 litre more per hundred kays. From the moment I got The Snob until my oil change, I cannot get under 10 litres/100 km. Now that the engine runs in Castrol Edge Sport blood, I've broken the barrier with hardly any change in driving style and routes. The car also feels more responsive.

You may need to shell out some money, about $60 for new oil and filter. You can probably use the same one and better if you can change the oil yourself. Sixty bucks is what I could have saved in fuel anyway, and would make the engine run in better spirit as well.

I'm not sure though what they use for Ralliarts and Xs, but I'd say it's synthetic because turbos require higher quality oils. Check with the dealer to be sure.

Thats true, the Ralliart and X's need a synthetic oil once the engine has been run in, but to put synthetic in from the start may be a no-no, turbo or N/A. (There's the old myth that fully synthetic won't break the engine in properly blah blah...) Up to you. I changed after 5k and won't be going back to the semi crap!

Why would better oil be worse for a new engine? I'm sure BMWs would go out of the dealership with the best lubricants under the hood.

This is an interesting topic. I always wondered why mitsubishi and many other manufacturers don't bother changing the oil after then 1000 km service.

My uncles who works for ford said that new cars nowadays don't need an oil change after the 1000 km service due to 2 reasons:

1. The engines are run in on the production line.

2. There are additives put into the oil from the factory which helps bed the seals in.

Squala, don't know what oil mitsubishi puts in the engine from the factory, but from my last service, my dealer had used mobil 1 which i am pretty sure is synthetic oil.

Maybe you should try to find out what new car gets delivered to dealerships with full synthetic oils. I wouldn't think there would be too many.

Think of this:
Manufacturers would know what to use in their cars.
They would want them to be in best shape for when people test drive them, but they don't get a $30 better oil, probably for the whole break in reason I would suspect. It makes sense. (that or they are too cheap to pay the $30)

Most new cars come with a run in oil you can buy this from most oil suppliers eg repco
After i rebuild motors like the one in my xf ute i used it for the run in
If you do not drive the car write on run in you will have oil problems
HINT
Do NOT sit on the one speed eg 100km all the time very your speed
60km 10min 80km 10min 100km 10min then back to 60km or 80km do not sit on 100km over a 100km trip the rings will glaze the bore
some with the revs bring them up say change gears at 2500rpm for the first 100km then 3000rpm 500km DO NOT RED LINE IT OF THE MARK

Just a question in regards to staying in one rpm, would that apply just for the first 1000 km or for a couple of thousand kms? I know from the manual it says to avoid driving on the highway for the first 1000 km's due to the reason you mentioned above.

me i say the first 2500km but 1000km is about right go with 1000km - 1500km as new car these days are better build then my days as a mechanic
