Petrol price hike
Hi all,
Is it just my imagination, or has anyone other than me noticed the rip off prices this whole week for petrol in Melbourne and other cities?
There should be no reason for such a price hike... the oil rate is hovering around USD$72 per barrel... and nothing in the news about it, that i can find ...
Something's fishy i reckon, let's get to the bottom of this... tell me your opinion...

Yeah in sydney our low was about $1.10-$1.15ish a couple of weeks ago. Low last week was more like $1.20 min... normally it jumps Thursday morning, but jumped Wednesday this week. High was about $1.32 this week I think.
These prices are Northshore in Sydney. Interesting to note that normally the Central Coast is dearer buy a few cents. This week fuel is slightly cheaper!!

Exalted,
You are 120% correct.
We are being ripped off blind for petrol in this country.
There is absolutely no reason for it to be as high as it is given crude prices and the Brent price that we and some other world regions have to use for pricing.
It can be as much as $20USD /barrel higher than the heavy crude price normally quoted by the media.
Still just a huge profit gouge by the oil companies, same as the mid week, Wed or Thurs price rises here in Perth , now occuring every week.
A strategy and campaign often touted in USA and here on occasion is for everybody in a city to not buy fuel on a given day etc to try and hurt the oil companies. TOTALLY USELESS.
In order to force the oil companies to lower prices there is a strategy that will work if everyone in country got on board. A national advert campaign is needed.
The strategy is very simple.
EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE PERMANENTLY STOPS BUYING A PARTICULAR BRAND FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD.
eg 3-12 MO NOBODY BUYS " BP "for eg.
If 80-95% of the population stopped buying BP, and I mention them as they seem to initiate the huge 16c/L weekly price rises here in Perth that other brands then follow.
I CAN GUARANTEE YOU ALL that if that were to happen and they saw their sales nationwide PLUMMET by 80-95% for even a week let alone 1 mo, never mind it continuing for 3-6mo. Their prices would drop in a hurry like a rock and as they did and people still didnt buy their fuel for 3-6 mo or more they would keep going down until their profit margin was very small.
Now of course as this effect starts to occur all the other brands will try to stay competitive and so drop their prices to match the boycotted companies.
The consumers must maintain the boycott for at least 3-6 mo, the longer the better to get max reductions across the board.
If the oil companies start to all raise prices again when the buying boycott is lifted, the consumers just repeat the whole boycott again.
There are over 18-20 million people I am sure who drive or have a vehicle here in Aust with a total pop of only 23million.
The power of the consumer to drive the supply and demand equation of any product but esp one as vital as fuel is ENORMOUS but it must be used.
When we are all forced to vote here in an election we see the power of the people as a whole.
The other rip off in fuel pricing is the GOVT ILLEGALLY APPLYING GST ON THE PETROL EXCISE TAX. THAT IS A TAX ON A TAX WHICH IS I BELIEVE, ILLEGAL UNDER THE CONSTITUTION.
THINK ABOUT IT........ A TAX ON A TAX!!!!
Is anybody else OUTRAGED BY THIS???????
The excise tax is 38c/L so a 3.8c/L GST is also added to it totalling 42c/L.
The Govt refused to do anything to remove this last year when we had the oil price surge caused by rampant uncontrolled speculation in oil futures.
It was widely covered by the media and all in govt made a lot of BS remarks and accusations on both sides of the house and did NOTHING.
If they removed that 3.8c/L GST I think they said they would lose
4 BILLION in revenue annually.
This should never have been implemented in the first place.
Having a GST applied to the wholesale price would be one thing but NOT to the tax component of the price.
Then again, does a product with a 32c/L excise tax need a GST component at all????
Can you imagine if water was taxed like fuel??
Sorry for the length of this post but I feel very angry at being robbed blind by the oil companies and our Govt.

Wow ... some people need to pour themself a nice big glass of "calm down" juice. Oil companies have been ripping us off for decades. No difference to now. The Gov gets too much money off it so they look the other way...... Why just be mad about that??? They use our tax payer money to take trips around the country, expensive restaurants, hotels, and as of late the Qld Gov have been using expenses for batteries and porno mags . Pollies are all crooks and so are oil companies....we need to accept this because we all need oil to go to our jobs!
Hard to swallow I know, but there are more terrifying things in this world to worry about than paying an extra $7-8 a week to an oil company!
CHILL MAN.....You'll live longer!
