There are two hex screws
They hold in the airbag / horn assembly
They are 180° apart from each other
If you want to remove it might be an idea to remove the negative lead off the battery first
Once the two hex bolts are backed off , they won't come out as held in place with tow plastic covers inside the steering wheel
Then the air bag can be wigged out
There is two plugs on it
A black one that activated the horn and the yellow one for the air bag
The air bag clip is a push type from memory and it's on a spring
Once the yellow plug is off you can remove the air bag and see the bolt holding on the steering wheel
To remove the covers where the stereo control is and the cruise control there is a single screw behind each
Remove the screw
Wiggle the covers forward a bit
There is a 4 pin plug on it from memory
It's a press in type one and it then disconnected from wiring harness and your good to roll

Re: Stock HU and Steering Wheel Controls
Definitely sounds simple enough, although not confident enough to attempt it.
I think this is one I'm going to leave for the professionals. Decided to book it in at Mitsubishi and get them to sort it out for me. I'm heading off for a bit of a get away in a couple of weeks and don't want to cause any more issues, especially since ill be doing a fair bit of driving.
Was actually talking to one of the techs there and he sounded confident that there may be an issue with the clock spring, almost sounded like hes seen it happen before. So might just let them have a look at it, i mean for the $88 they quoted me i think im better off doing that than fooling around with the steering wheel. Probably might work out better for me as they can check that the controls are working as well as i dont have a spare module to try out.
Thanks again for your help. Will have to post back on what they find out.

Maybe shoot a message to aerpro on facebook they are really helpful. They might be able to shed some light on the issue.

Actually that's not a bad idea. Might even see about contact Kenwood as well, there must be a way to hard reset the HU as well.
Quick update, took my car in today to have it looked at got a call around lunch time that they couldn't find any sort of fault at all with the checks they did today.
So taking it back next week with the stock HU (spewing i didn't take it with me today) so they can run some more checks to see if they can pick up on anything with everything back to stock.
Sounds like this has left them just as perplexed as me...

Yeah I think I know the one you mean. It's the one where you need paperclip to press.

Mmmmm
I'm sure on my Kenwood I didn't need a paperclip
I'm sure there is a software settings in the menu for a full reset

Re: Stock HU and Steering Wheel Controls
Yeah i found the option you were talking about. On my HU there is a physical button which doesn't look like one on the front. I always thought it was just an indicator that lets you know that the HU as actually powered on etc. But with some scrolling through forums people have said its a hidden button that you can press with a paper click or a sim eject tool etc. and it hard reset the HU.
Mine doesnt have an option within the software to reset it.
