@bumblebee - how did you install the CB?
Considering one if we go on this trip through the NT and SA. My idea is since many are so small and light to just place it in the centre of the dash, maybe some velcro to hold it down.
Not sure of the antenna though?

Re: Cheapost mods, both worth doing and 'absolutely not'
The CB is a piece of cake. Get a "Z" mount for the mudguard and mount the antenna to it. I have a GME electrophone with a swappable 6 or 9 dB aerial. You buy the aerial with the cable already attached. You not supposed to cut the cable as the cable is pretuned length to give you best . performance from it. However you need to cut the plug off the end of the cable that connects to the back of the cb or you will never get it in the cabin thru the firewall. Feed the cable either thru a hole behind the abs module on the passenger side or thru the rubber mount where the main wiring harness goes into the cabin.
If you chose the main wiring harness then be careful you dont damage any cables.
To hold the cb to the car grab some velcro. Velcro has a hook side and a loop side. The hook side will stick to the lancer floor carpet well. So use the velcro that has a sticky back and use the glue side.of it to stick it to the uhf main unit. Then the hook side.of the velcro presses into the carpet of the lancer and holds on very well.
Once the cable.for the antenna inside the cabin tou will need to solder on a new uhf male.plug ao you can reconnect to the back of the uhf.
Roll up the spare cable and hide it up under the dash for the antenna etc
Hope that helps

Re: Cheapost mods, both worth doing and 'absolutely not'
Yes that helps a lot, I have a electrics guy if I need help.
Think they used a Z mount on the Pathfinder to put the antenna on the drivers side but I was thinking of mounting the antenna between the spot lights for a cleaner look... once I work out what I'm doing there LOL
I have seen some now are plug in and go with GPS style screen mounts and the antenna goes on the windscreen.
Repco has this one on sale...

But it will have to wait until later once I do something about the lights.

I much prefer a gme electrophone. Been using them for over 20 years. Never had a drama with them going faulty. Parts if needed are easy to get. And tons of service agency around should you ever need one.

Re: Cheapost mods, both worth doing and 'absolutely not'
I know I went on a club drive once and some had hand held CBs but not sure if anyone had one hard wired in.
A CB is good but the reality is its probably not gonna be used much, but like anything its worth having when needed.
This is the new thread.

Just be careful if you mount it on there as you need a really good earth for the antenna to work properly.

I thought the antenna was self contained back to the CB unit?

The aerial usually has its Earth/ground through the mounting bracket, which is why it has the stud then the bracket connected to the body work. quite often recommended to get a good bare metal to bare metal connection as possible.

Okay something to thing about then, still prefer to mount it near the number plate as I've see a few like that, but will take that into account.
