Smart key boot lock

Postby aspir3 » Fri Jun 03, 2016 5:42 pm

Does anyone know what happens if you close the boot with the smart key in it?

Does the boot just open?

Or does it lock but you can press the button to open it?

I would appreciate it if someone knows the answer or could test it for me.

Just gave it a try.....with the car locked I put the key in the boot and closed it the car unlocked and I pressed the boot release button on the boot lid and it opened the boot ( the car beeps when you shut the boot). With the car unlocked when the boot is shut it still will open when you press the boot release on the boot lid.So it's pretty well idiot proof by the look of things.:)

Thanks Darryl, I'm looking at removing the button.

I now need to check whether it will work with the button removed. It should be the same unless the sensor is part of the button

Never tried this, I did test what happens if the spare keys are in the car and you look it, from memory it beeps and doesn't allow you to do it.

Yes it works still with out the button
Both my do-Luck trunks had no spot for the button,
The boot release still works fine
However you may miss it I sure did

Thanks Dion, that is great to know.

I normally press my button on my remote control because I like my boot unlocked before I get there.

Yeah, you can actually have the car running with one set of keys, then manually lock the car with the other (like remove the metal key bit and insert it into key hole manual), and the car will be locked but still running with no one in it haha. I guess it could be good in summer if you want to keep the air con running.

Are you talking about the smart key?

Yeah, the keyless entry fob. Using the key itself overrides the fob it seems, so you CAN lock the car with a key inside.

If you lock the car with the fob in it you just press the button to open it.

Just tested the boot thing, this is without using the spare keys. I dropped the keys in the boot and shut it, would not allow me to lock the car or use the button on the boot to open it. Of course the floor lever next to the drivers seat works. Then I locked the car using the key fob as you normally do, then used the boot button to open the boot. With the doors locked I dropped them in, just like if someone might do when loading shopping. As soon as the boot is closed the lights flashed and the doors unlocked. Letting me once again pull the floor lever and open the boot.

So it's clear the smart keys do have safety built in to stop you locking them in the car.

One of the best features I like about the CJ (on the VRX) is the smart keys, not having to get them out of your pocket to open and start the car, makes life much easier when you're not fumbling with keys when shopping or its raining.

Interesting, like I said if I lock the car with the metal spare key itself, you can lock the key in it, even with the engine still running. I just retested and took a video, it's uploading now, will edit when it's up.

EDIT: Here's the link, might still be uploading depending on when you read this. https://youtu.be/Iz3CQV-s2b0

Pet Peeve - Learn to use your camera in landscape mode!

The metal key is one thing but the electronic fob systems don't allow you to lock the keys in the car or the boot.

Yeah it's harder to hold the phone in landscape and fiddle with the keys at the same time :P And I was just mentioning something interesting about it which Aspir3 either misinterpreted what I said or thought it wasn't possible :P
