Are tinting these considered a defect?

I don't want a complete black, just something a bit darker.

Well you shouldn't blacken your number plate, might get pulled over for that one :)

I used a very light spray on tint for my rear lights and center brake, just a couple of layers to make it a little darker and it looks good. You'll need to mask the hell out of the car or take parts off.

Another option is tint like you'd use on you windows but designed for tail lights and exterior use.

I tinted my indicators, and the bottom red reflectors, and I haven't been pulled over one :)

I am yet to do my middle brake light, but there are stickers you can buy from Ebay that cover it saying "lancer" :P

it would be classed as a defectable modification. just because people have done it and have not been caught for it doesnt mean its ok. also if you tint rear lights and indicators and find yourself being the cause of a crash have fun getting your insurance to cover you.

I agree but it does depend how dark, some go overboard and the rear lights are black and all but useless. A light tint where they are still viable from a set distance and legally you should be fine. Just find out what those legal requirements are if you're worried.

Mine are tinted so light unless you looked at them side by side with a stock CJ you would not know but it does make a difference to the look.

Or just get some LED rear lights from about $200, there are lots to choose from.

Like I said there are many others.

Tinted side indicators for about $30 on eBay. The side lights are an easy 5 min DIY swap.

Not sure is I like the Brake light sticker with LANCER on it, but each to there own.

Edit - here is a smoked 3rd brake light for $170.

i just unclipped the side indicators and unscrewed the rear brake light then masked them up and gave them a light dusting with black platidip, does the trick and it is a thin enough coat that light still shows through no problem, also if anyone hassles you about it you can peel/rub the pastidip off right in front of them, problem solved

And plead ignorance that the previous owner must have done it ;)
