LEDS - DOME LIGHT HELP?!

Okay so i know this has been talked about a few years ago on an older post but couldn't really find the answer i was looking for.

i have two white led strips i want to put under the dash, but want them to act exactly like the dome light (fade on when i unlock the car, fade out when lock the car)

Is there a basic way to do this?

From my understanding you just need to find a 12V source (possibly a fuse) then tap into a wire harness next to the fuse box. When i did this the leds stayed on constantly.

I'm 100% new to electrical so any info will help me most defiantly.

Saw that link thankyou.

And i do understand i have to attach some sort of wire to that harness.

But PLEASE pretend i am stupud and know NOTHING about electrical.

Which wire do i tap into? positive or negative?

Please help!
