How do you remove the trim under the steering wheel?

How does one remove the trim under the steering wheel column. There is an airbag their.

I removed the screws in it and the foot well cover, but still seems hard to remove?

I am trying to be cautious because I don't want deploy the airbag.

There is also three plastic clips down the bottom use a screw driver to pry them up and pull out caution is good just apply firm pressure along the edges of the trim. With the airbag just apply gentle pressure on it when removing trim around it. It won't come out with it as it's attached separately

Do I need to remove any trim above like the piano plastic bar? or the left foot side cover (near the clutch).


Also will the airbag cover come out or will that stay in?

It will stay in, doesn't move.

pull the bottom out/up, comes out easy.

Be careful of the traction control switch, once the panel is removed you will need to disconnect the wires from behind. Don't yank the panel off too hard!

just disconnect the battery if ur worried about the airbag.

takes a bit of the bag to deploy

It's like Lego as someone once told me, just clips and screws. The airbag is there but won't deploy without a considerable impact

I've removed this many times
it won't come off completely unless you remove the main trim piece under the head unit but it will move out of the way for you to access the switches
Remove the 2 screws down bottom and the plastic clips down bottom
from there carefully pull it out from the bottom towards you
to put it back in make sure you get the clips where the airbag sits flush
quite an easy removal

I once witnessed a BF Falcon turn across the path of an oncoming ute - I estimate the combined collision would have been 80Km/h - the front of the Falcon was gone completely - no airbags deployed in the Falcon because the crumple zone reduced the impact sufficiently.

The ute didn't fare too badly, it was one of those 'indestructible' ones.

You can't set of an airbag just by punching it, disconnect the battery and you'll be fine...

Well I got it out with ease... I didn't need to remove the main trim at all.

I just need to force it out a bit more and came out pretty easily...

putting it back on was another thing, had to line up the clips with the air bag surround and i was trying to put the under carpet inside rather than clip it from the front (took me a good 10 minutes to figure why the under carpet wasn't staying in place)

Yeah the clips around the airbag can be fiddly to put back in properly
