Illegal number plates must be located where the manufacturer put them. In the case of our lancers that is in the centre of the front bumper.

I was the First one in NSW to actually put it on the side with a side mounted plate
I never had any dramas with it...
Although I do remember reading it somewhere that the number plate has to be perpendicular to the axle... So I you ever get a cop that knows a thing or two you might have dramas but otherwise you should be fine
Mine's quicker then yours!!!

It's is illegal in Vic to have it on the side unless from factory.
But if you follow ADR guidelines, then it's a 50/50 that a copper will be an ass about it.
Cop tried to defect me for my side plates on an Evo (stock position) and told him its factory. Said BS and I did it to be "cool" cause only the Alfa Romeo comes factory will side plates in Aus.
Took photos but no defect. Send me an EPA letter instead cause he had nothing :/
Your choice to risk it but prepare urself when u meet the drama queen

You wouldn't be able to...
The law does stipulate that the number plate has to be in the location as per manufacturers specs. The only manufacturer that can "get away with it" are only Alfa's
Also there is legislation that says that the number plate has to be perpendicular to the front axle.

.
I've got mine mounted (temporarily) by zip-ties onto the lower grille section and I've had no issues so far.

The legislation in Queensland simply requires it to be mounted on the front, facing forward, perpendicular to the ground and 'clearly visible' at 45 degrees from the top and sides.

They tend to be a bit more 'sensible' up here and as long as you use common sense* with your car mods, they're usually ok - it doesn't hurt to check with the guys in the Motor Transport Dept. and carry a copy of the relevant legislation with you - but nothing's going to help if you run into a toy soldier with no gonads...
