hey guys
Hey look i got into contact with both Mercury motorsports and APC about tuning my EVO X
And im not sure if i got quoted an over priced amount or if that's really how much it is.
Mercury quoted me 1980 for just a Tune :S That seems a bit expensive right? or is that just me being a cheap ass haha
And at APC I asked for a TBE, and a tune i think he said 700 for the tune. But he also said i would need all this other things like UICP, aswell as piping for the bov/intake/ turbo aswell as ralliart race plugs and a fuel pump long story short he quoted me $5000. :S
My car has 6500km do i really need new plugs, piping and fuel pump for just a TBE, UICP and atune? or was he trying to get more out of me
Do you guys think it would be way better to buy stuff from the net then get it installed by someone then go get my tune ? What are your suggestions im such a noob at tuning first turbo car and all.

it depends on how far u want to go.
i dont know what twatty or arutha have spent but its in the 10`s of thousands.
most only change the exhaust, change the uicp from rubber to metal and a drop in air filter. (thats the mechanical changes)
then the tune, that can cost u virtually nothing.\ simply uploading a file from the internet onto your ecu, or a custom tune by a tune house on a dyno.
that should cost u about a grand, maybe more expensive in brisbane.
mercury are expensive for a custom tune because they use ECUTEK, which attracts an $800 liscensing fee paid to ECUTEK themselves plus mercurys fee.

Hey, admittedly i dont own an evo and i'm a bit of a noob myself but here's what i've learnt.
A custom tune will cost you in the ball park of about $1000 average. You could get a great tune by Merlin who has a great rep here.
as for upgraded parts for your Evo... i guess it really depends on what you want to do with it. To be honest i dont think an Evo really needs that much more in terms of hardware upgrade. TBE, UICP maybe and a tune will work fine for daily driving. As long as youre not chasing more kw then something like that is good enough i think
Personally I think it'd be better to look for stuff and get it off the net. The shops will always mark it up on you. There are many aftermarket parts manufacturers that sell direct to you off the net. Just check out what you want and search around is my suggestion (it's what i'm doing currently for my RA too )

seems a bit pricey and some of the stuff like a fuel pump and race plugs if your still on the stock x turbo and regular fuel seem abit overkill. Piping for the turbo/bov seems a bit overkill too. UICP makes sense, exhaust makes sense so maybe 1k-1.5k there then a tune. I'd look at the e-tune options and using the opensource tuning software instead of ecutek since its a bit behind in features etc.
Seems like most of the x's can put out low to mid 300hp with a basic tune, uicp exhaust and 3port you might get some gains with all the extra little bits but next level would be a bigger turbo.
have a read through some of the evo x dyno threads on other sites and you'll quickly notice the same sort of mods popping up and ralliart race plugs are not one of them

Qld is crazy expensive for in house tuning it seems.
what you need :
get a panel filter for your airbox. $70-80 cosworth for instance
get a cat back exhaust, or if you can afford it a dump back exhaust and high flow cat (eg turbo XS). any exhaust shop can fit it. you don't need to pay big $$ at a specialist evo workshop to fit it. look at overseas prices, they are often way cheaper local shops even with shipping. there are some great deals locally though from time to time.
get nothing else!

you can increase your top end a little by using a 3 port boost solenoid to squeeze a little more out of the turbo. they are cheap at ~$130. it may or may not be a difference you can feel on the Butt Dyno.

you can get a remote tune (e-tune). which would involve buying/borrowing an Openport 2.0 tactrix cable, and preferably installing a wideband o2 sensor ($200). I'm just guessing because i don't know what other guys charge, but I'd say something like 250-450 for the tune done remotely.

But bear in mind Evo 10s are quite different to earlier Evos with tuning and i don't know how many they have done or what their results are like.

yeah you guys get ripped off. The Qld guys i have helped out told me the prices local shops were charging and i nearly fell over. To be fair though, some very nice cars have come out of the north

Well that would defiantly explain the price haha i always imagined a tune to be cheaper i guess its cause im always looking on americian forums so damn cheap there god damn

Yeah man i hear you that sounds like the best option buy everything online get it installed then head over and get my car tuned America is so cheap

Yeah Hahaha thats exactly what i thought the hell am i going to do with new plugs and a fuel pump im not going crazy with the mods just yet. And thats pretty much the power gain im looking for i want about 320whp But i dont want to spend 5 grand to get there :S

tell me about it man its stupidly expensive :S god damn yeah i was going to get from a dump to the tip exhaust but your right i will go to an exhaust shop and just get an exhaust fitted there then i can slowly drive my car and get it tunned that same day no harm there :S
I dont think anyone here does that kind of tuning its all in the work shop from what i read up :S Unfortunate but hey what can you do.plus i wouldn't have the slightest idea how to do it either.
well even that gain sounds awesome to me thats like 300whp more or less .. almost
