Seriously dude, don't bother jailbreaking. Not worth it now the apps are properly supported. They aren't dear, and most are free anyway.
Oh forgot to mention Wolfenstein 3D is awesome!! Its a port straight of the old DOS version. A must get!
Make sure you update iTunes to the latest version. And do the sortware update on your iPod. And get a case as mentioned. I have a leather flip-front case, and I can use the iPod in or out of it.
Unfortunately, 3rd party programs to replace iTunes do not work properly with the iPod Touch. because the updating, app store etc is not supported in 3rd party iTunes replacements. Just stick with iTunes, there's nothing at all wrong with it once you learn how to use it. Fkn n00bs always whinging about it
Congrats on the purchase too btw! Did you get 8, 16 or 32gb? I got 16, the max size at release when I got mine
Make sure you buy the AppleCare extended warranty like I said earlier. Mine paid for itself.

You get used to typing on it and you become really quick. Turn it 90 degrees side on in Safari and you will get a wide keyboard. (Turn it, then open up keyboard) In software 3.0, the wide keyboard is being applied in the Mail, notes apps etc where it also would be useful.
Also, the auto-correction is great, it learns commonly used words and mistakes too.
Once you get used to it all it's overall an awesome piece of tech. Most knockers just try it out for 5 mins in the shop, but don't bother trying to play with it in length.
I suggest play around, swipe things, double tap things, pinch and pull things. Just to see what it does. There's heaps of hidden tricks it has haha
