Vinyl dye (does it work??)

Postby tjoz » Thu Nov 18, 2010 5:25 pm

Went into Autobarn today to get a few things and didnt get anything as they no longer sell some of the stuff I wanted... Though did see the vinyl dye things they have. Has anyone used these before and do they actually work?

Planning on doing all the pillars and the roof in black but not so sure on vinyl dye. Is it dodgy?

I used vinyl dye a fair bit when I used to do interiors for older cars. It works ok for non-traffic areas, but will wear off and fade if it experiences wear or friction. When I built my own older car, I opted to retrim with new vinyl rather than dying old vinyl. For a nice car like ours, I really wouldn't recommend it. Far better off retrimming from scratch if it's something you really want to do.

in a nutshell, forget it, its not really a dye as in it doesnt permeate into the vinyl.

Will do it in material then. Ive looked at that vinyl dye for ages and have always thought na this looks dodgy. Hate going into Spotlight though, the store looks like a 3rd world country (crap everywhere) or you get strange looks. Guys dont last long in that store

Another question, leather is heavier than cloth yes??

lol, that depends totally on the type of material and the thickness, but as a rule of thumb, yes :)

The interior pilar covers are plastic not vinyl
I don't think vinyl dye would work on plastic.
However,
you could either repaint them in 2 pac with flex add in the paint and use a plastic primer or you could wrap them in your choice of fabric, vinyl, leather or self adhesive vinyl like 3M Di-Noc.
