fitting reverse parking sensors

The genuine ones are about $350-400 installed. They are about $200-odd just for the kit to do yourself. I have recently installed some on a different car (not a Lancer) that I got from ebay for $50 and they work fine. Once you get over the fact you're about to drill through the plastic on your car, they are quite easy to do!

I bought my kit from ebay for $80 & fitted myself, no probs so far.

Prep took longer than actual fitting, had to be 100% before committing hole-saw to bumper.:shock:

Hmm, you'll get used to it! I scratched my rims and nearly hit the back of the car when I first got it but now I'm used to the dimensions of the car.

Though I have to say... it's still hard for me to tell if I'm backed into a parking lot far enough.

Rverse sensors are almost essential for the Sportback!

Yes I did fit the rear parking sensors to my car.

I found them very easy to do but I am a fitter and turner by trade and I am use to my way around a car.

If you are good reading instruction, confident with a drill and feel okay removing your rear bar then do it yourself.

If any one needs advice just ask and I am happy to help install for any one in SA .

few points:

-Dealership said $550 (Jason from Alto) but he said go with the aftermarket and told me to check this forum :D

-Ebay has a few for less than $50, they are cheap as! BUT they are black/white/grey and they dont match my car colour (lightning blue),
do i need to buy some extra paint and do them myself? itll look ugly with black sensor dots :(
The white sensors will be easiest to paint over right? not the black ones?


-There are these wireless ones im not sure how great they work but yeah anyone know anything about em? maybe i dont need to drill at all! :D

I would not buy or fit any other rear sensors then factory. The ebay ones are often cheap for a reason. Factory are a good quality and will be covered by the 5 year warranty. The factory are plug and go where the ebay need to work out the wiring and splice into it. Ebay use a screen that needs to be fitted into the cabin which in my opinion look ugly and need to drill holes into interior, which will devalue for resale.
The rear bumper is easy to remove. A few screws around the wheel arches and inside the boot and then just pull it off. It is basically clipped on.
The factory sensors are painted already. To paint the ebay ones will be quite expensive if you don't know any one.
Trust me don't look at any thing other then factory.

Errm you don't need to remove the bumper to fit the sensors on the CJ, ample access behind there.

Well I've got a set similar to that one above, I mounted the display above rear view with double sided tape & ran cable through headlining & down A pillar, no holes drilled. :D You can leave the display / speaker in the parcel tray if cant be stuffed running into cabin & use the audio only. ;)

Anyway sounds like your not confident to DIY, definitely go see the dealer or get a quote from a specialist to fit their aftermarket system, they should warrant their parts & labor.

The instruction tells you to take the rear bar off because a 25-30 mm hole needs to be drilled to allow the wiring loom to go through.

I found removing the rear bar really easy and took no time at all and made it really easy to tidy the wiring up.

reverse sensors are very easy to do. just tap onto the reverse light power.

all up, with running the display up to the dash and drilling holes etc.. 45min to an hour for install

hahaha thanks i ordered them on ebay (sorry aspir3 :P)
i just cant afford another $550 atm, its alot of money
it was about $55
hopefully a friend can help me out with the install
and they end up being decent out of the box
however if not.. will go with the genuine ones :)

The ebay ones I got for my other car are a speaker only - almost identical in appearance to the factory kit speaker and sounds the same too. I don;t know why they make those display units - isn't it against instinct to be looking on your dash at something while going backwards!? I just look in the side mirrors (used to reverse parking buses) and use the sensor beeping as assistance for stopping only.

One interseting point with the ebay ones though - I am not sure how they'd go being installed on a new car like the Lancer where (I am assuming) the wiring is multi-plexed. The wiring on my old car was easy as - just splice the reverse light power - but with multi-plexing, it isn;t that easy. Something to consider I guess.
