We talking about Volkswagen’s little engines? Those things are not built to last.. missus little golf has lead to oil leaks, mates GTI engine blew at 6k rpm.. I’m sure Honda’s new civics I think specifically the RS is turbo fed, but seems pretty solid

Not only VW but all makes that have switched to smaller turbo engines, in order to gain benefits in various countries.
Reasons that are irrelevant to us in Aus: Basic Civic is NA 1.8, Rs performance version has the turbo. in a slightly smaller engine.
I don't see any problem with turbos in performance high priced versions as these engines are specifically constructed to high standards
and in general are as with lancer RA and Evo engines of equal size built to much more exacting clearances and standards.
HMMMM but still more costly to run and maintain!

Ahhh yeah I get you, it’s getting more and more popular these days isn’t it, good ol small engine/turbo build for that fuel economy and cheap manufacturing!

Mercedes Smart car anyone? 600cc Turbo...
not sure which iteration this is from but isn't this the smallest turbo ever first released in 1998.
People have been turbo charging motorcycles, lawnmowers, and go karts for years, anything small cc and petrol/diesel powered, someone somewhere has slapped a turbo on it...
They even found room for a wastegate on this one
Small engines will become the future, gone are the days where the engine was half of the car, well it still will be, but the car will be much smaller around it... Engines built by the likes of Mercedes and Nissan etc will have far less problems as they'll have the R&D (and usually race testing at Le-Mans or other endurance races) thrown at them for years before being seen in the market, but when the likes of HAVAL or CHERRY get their hands on them, that's when things go wrong...

There are several different engine designs, in terms of the likes of inline/straight (like the Lancer) vs flat (Subaru, Porsche) vs V (most 6 cylinder engines and above). It will likely be in the future that engines will be generators for hybrid vehicles rather than for providing the actual thrust, so smaller engines wouldn't be so much of a problem as long as they can provide the electrical power. Currently hybrid vehicles have large, heavy batteries that gives you range anxiety, or PHEV vehicles where the engine is still connected to the drivetrain. If you have a smaller battery which is effectively a capacitor, and an efficient generator you would have the best of both worlds. Graphene batteries are heavily being researched (the 'new' Samsung graphene battery is just a graphene enhanced lithium battery), they have the advantage of being able to be charged considerably quicker, ideal for car capacitor use.
In terms of green energy, no reason why the fuel for the car can't be bio sourced.
