First why no insurance, I know its a Craptiva but still?
As for the keys, the 2 places to avoid is near the front (or back) door or hanging on a nice spot in the garage makes KEYS.
I was worried about smart thieves using electronics to steal my CJ while traveling last month so got one of those RIDF signal blocking pouched, every night I put the keys in it no matter where we were. Also good to use if you're not parked in a garage or behind a locked gate at night.

I keep the keys on the dresser in the bedroom, but I also keep a spare remote (without the key) in the garage in case I need to get in the car to grab something.
I hope they at least have 3rd party property insurance! If they had hit another car they could be up for thousands more!

Most thrives already know the common places to look for keys.
Keep them in an out of the way place
Out of sight out of.mind
As a suggestion , a Milo Tin or similar works in the pantry.
Try some creative thinking and you should be ok.

Maybe a hook with a sign "These are NOT my car keys" to confuse them?

It's not like third party insurance is expensive, we paid $20 a month for my other halfs 08 Lancer when he owned it, and it was insured for theft/fire etc.
I keep mine on my computer desk, I don't understand why people would leave them so close to the front door or in plain sight, seems like common sense was lost on this one, but how unfortunate for them to have to cough up a couple of grand to get it fixed
Poor car.
