Hi All
Does anyone on here ride a motorbike? If so what do you ride, when and where did you get your licence and how did you learn to ride? I have a mate who is going to take me out teach me how to ride his dirt bike soon, I am seriously considering buying one to ride to work and back (SO CHEAP ON FUEL). What's everyone's thoughts?

Yep, 83 Honda CBX650E, 2-3yrs been riding. no previous experiance, first bike was a Honda XL175 trail bike.
i had about 2 weeks riding the XL around my parents back yard before i went for my Ls.
im no expert at bikes and im no Casey Stoner but my only advice is Practice slow riding, and very slow riding.
If you can ride a pushbike and drive a manual car you SHOULD be able to ride a motorbike
it cost me about $12-$15 to chocka block fill the tank from empty and get about 250ks, but thats a old bike so i dare say newer bikes will be better on fuel

Hey Buzz I got my licince over 5 years ago here in Sydney. I ride a 03 Kawasaki zx6r.
Not sure how to go about getting your license in other states but here in NSW you need to attend a 2 day pre learner course where they teach you the basics of riding a motorcycle. After the 2 day course you can get your L's. Back when I got L's, you can go for your P's after 3 months on L's and get your full license after a year on your P's.
Riding is awesome but that's coming from someone who rides. It is definitely more dangerous than driving a car and you need to have a clear head whenever you ride. I've had mates that died because the decided to go for a ride after having a fight with their other half or kids.
If and when you do, make sure that you don't ride past your skill level. Otherwise you will pay. Respect the motorcycle and the motorcycle will respect you back.

Wise words, thanks for the advice... whats the difference between having your l's or your p's for a motorcycle? Was thinking of getting a ninja 250r if I decide riding is for me, they are an approved LAM bike.

whats your body build like? i sat on a 250R and i was very uncomfortable, i was too big for the bike, im abit under 6foot, sat on the 650R (can get a restricted version for your L's) and it was a good fit for me, L's and Ps are are the same, no more than a 650 (most are a restricted 650 to suit)

could depend if your all legs or not. im 6'1" and my mate is 6'2" we adjusted the heck out of the foot pegs and levers. your thighs kinda hit a weird spot on the tank. but it was still definitely ride able day to day.

Only takes me about 15 minutes too and from work, so I don't think I would be going on long rides to often.. Anyway, I may own myself when my mate takes me out and decide riding isn't for me lol... generally how much does it cost for some decent riding gear? helmet, gloves, jacker etc...?
