Having done several advanced driving and riding courses over the years, I'm keen to do one in the Lancer. As it's the first FWD car I've owned, I'd like to get to know it's capabilities (and my limitations ... ).

I've been thinking of doing the Ian Luff driver training course for some time now, but lack of time hasn't allowed me to do it.

Just a heads up if you or a parent or grandparent have car insurance with AAMI you can do it with them for free (and if the insurance is in your name you'll get a discount).

It's pretty much just the defensive driving behind the wheel without the lecture on roads rules in the "classroom".
I did the rally drive with these guys and they were very good and helpful in teaching/instructing how to rally drive and I have no doubt they would also be good for a skid pan day. I had been considering doing one with them sometime when I get the free time to go up there....

Just make sure what the iternery and course is. Some just go on about "defensive" driving, as in road rules, and making sure there are no approaching cars when going thru green light intersections and positioning your steering "straight ahead" when waiting at lights to turn, etc.
Others go thru emergency braking and manouvering and emergency car handling skills.
I'd prefer the later, take the car for a skid or two and see how to handle the car, how the ABS and ASC works when it kicks in and avoid styrofoam pedestrians, etc.

Agreed. You raise very good points. I'd only be interested in the latter as well rather than an overpriced classroom.

That sounds more like something which you should get involved in a skid pan day for because in dry conditions it'll take a lot more before it kicks in.
