I parked in front of a massive rock in the work van one day, totally forgot about it when I went to drive off and couldn't see it from the cabin. Drove over it and put a massive hole in the sump and dropped 5 litres of oil on the driveway. Oops.

Every story I read here makes me go

Image

The one and only time I damaged a car (happened to be on my Ls) was when I parked in front of a concrete curb at a shopping centre, forgot about/didn't notice it, and tried to drive forward when I returned to the car (the exit ramp was right in front of me). The ground clearance on my mum's Citroen C4 was less than that of a Gallardo (that's right, I pretty much drove a Lambo on my Ls 8), and the front just nudged the curb. My 16 year old mind thought 'hey, I'm not moving ... better make the engine vroom vroom more' and I slowly depressed the accelerator pedal until I heard a cacophony of crunches and snaps. My dad and I got out to look at the damage - one tiny clip had snapped on the left side of the bumper but made the whole damn front bumper hang off, and the old man was like

Got quoted $400.00 by Citroen, $100.00 by a smash repairer, but elbow-greased it myself to good as new.

From then on, I've always parked as far away from as many cars, poles, curbs and other objects as possible, in every car park:

and I also walk the long way around to the driver's door so I can check my surroundings. Also: my friends and I now have the walking stamina of olympic athletes .

I've done that after backing into tight parallel spots.

Some people legitimately think touch parking is OK.
