I don't think people should try to compete.. even with a $12K camera you cannot immediately replace talent and an eye for image composition... just check out Tenchi's images, they're high end! The rest of us just try to keep up!
That said, I reckon I could get an equivalent image with my pocket sized 7.2mega pixel... it is all about composition and lighting (oh, and a clean car!)
Tenchi, the initial shot is with my D200. My brand new toy will require another heavy investment in full-frame lens, rather than DX (which is optimised for APS-C sized sensors...)
So, have the body, can use the VR DX lenses but I will soon buy a F1.2 50mm fixed, just to get started.
I spent the money instead on the 3 x SB-800 iTTL flashes ...
I have more carbon fibre in my photography gear than my car
tripods and monopods get heavy if not made in carbon!
Thanks for the tips and tricks

Ok, so you have a tripod and a camera that can leave the shutter open (BULB)? Yes, cool...
step one; must be dark!
step two; you must wear dark clothes.
step three; set up tripod, camera, compose shot (use light here to allow camera to focus)
step four; depress shutter, leaving it open.
step five; crawl around with torches!
The above shots were done in 4 or 5 minutes (you can even see the star rotation in the sky, look for the little streaks in the sky!)
I laid in front of the car many times to get the brake inners torched or flashed....
Good luck, I think a lot of you have a great deal of creativity, so let it loose!
