VICTORIA'S oldest hoon driver asked police if he could be let go with a warning after being clocked 60km/h over the limit.
The Herald Sun reports the 79-year-old from the tiny town of Aubrey, who recorded a speed of 160km/h, came to a screeching halt in the middle of his lane after a second police officer attempted to intercept him on the undulating Blue Ribbon Rd, 5km from Horsham.
He will be charged on summons with several speeding offences, including driving at a dangerous speed, after he was pulled up at 1.25pm yesterday.
The unfazed and unrepentant retiree, only two months shy of his 80th birthday, said he was on his way to a doctor's appointment and had even slowed down a few kilometres before being intercepted.
"He didn't see me until he got within 150m of my patrol car,'' Murtoa Sgt Patrick Harrington said.
"He hit the brakes and went by me and stopped in the middle of the lane and got out of his car.
"His excuse was that he was running late for an appointment.
"But he did say 'it was lucky you didn't get me before, I was going faster'.
"He wasn't fazed or anything by the whole thing.''
Rainbow police officer Leading Senior Constable Tony Clark was stunned when he saw the car zoom by near Kalkee, about 24km from where he was eventually intercepted. He gave chase but his four-wheel-drive could not keep up with the speeding 1999 Mitsubishi Magna, which was overtaking other cars at high speed.
Despite being able to immediately impound the car under anti-hoon laws, the driver was allowed to continue on his way. He has been ordered to take his car to a police station tomorrow, where it will be impounded.
Apart from the high speed, Sgt Harrington said the driver, who was wearing glasses, may have had difficulty seeing the marked police cars.
"I think he needs new ones,'' he said.
"He didn't see Tony and he didn't see me.
"The speed he was travelling at ridiculous.''
that's insane! He shouldn't of been allowed to drive to the appointment after being caught, if I was the officer I would've not let him drive and take him in the patrol car to his appointment instead...
If that was the same story but an 18 year old the media would be going crazy and calling for the car to be crushed, and the teenager probably would've been arrested!
