45,000k service... car faster/louder :S

Postby Mits » Wed Feb 05, 2014 8:14 pm

Hey all,

So I took my 2011 SX in for it's 45,000km service on monday through a Mitsubishi dealership and was surprised with how I got my car back. I have a custom exhaust but that is about as far as "Performance" mods go on my car as well as running 98 octane. As I drove out of the dealership I noticed when I planted my foot my car would have a extremely deep exhaust note (more than usual) between 3k-4k revs whilst being slightly louder throughout the whole rev range.

I also felt that my car had a lot more power under acceleration which by no means I am complaining :D Basically as far as I am aware there really shouldn't be a cause for this as it is just a general 45,000k service?? They replaced my air filter with a new one as part of the service but my old air filter was still in great condition (so I can rule this out?).

What are peoples thoughts? I love how my car sounds louder now and has more power but would like to know what they exactly did to achieve that?

- Mits.

To be honest, it just sounds like your air filter cover/box might have been put on loosely.

It's probably achieving the same effect as this:

Checked the air filter box and everything is tight as it should be?

have a look at your receipt and log book.
chances are they put in some injector cleaner or some other type of additive into the fuel system.

Checked that but doesn't say anything relevant. It's a very noticeable difference but can't work out what would cause it...

Is the air box together at the bottom? This is common, the top clips are on but is the bottom slotted together?

Exactly what's happened to me the last two times the car has been serviced.

It's not readily apparent if the filter or case hasn't been fitted correctly i.e. you can't necessarily see or feel anything wrong.

You can try getting someone to rev the motor while you're looking under the hood and if things aren't as they should be, you'll hear air being sucked and the filter or cover vibrating, causing the noise.

That said, I have had to take a mechanic with me both times for a drive to demonstrate the problem because they couldn't pick it just revving.
