The rear fog light is a high intensity stop/brake light so all the morons who are tailgating at any speed above a crawl when the viz is very low, down below a few hundred metres to zero can hopefully see you before ramming into you . It happens all the time overseas.

yep same there thought it was for the tow bar, but yeah i thought it was also too high.

I have only heard/seen of one Sportback with a tow bar. It comes out from underneath the bumper bar.
When I first got my sportback I was thinking of getting the flog light to put in the space, but was quickly talked out of it by ClubCJ members at the time!

Or stepping outside the box ....
Option 1. Smoke Machine.
Option 2. Oil dispersal unit. (for those high beaming tail gaters)
Option 3. Spike strip deployment. (Same reason as above)
