My dad was a cop for about 30 years, and most of them were on the road, so before I even had a licence I had been to my fair share of offensive and defensive driving coerces with him, in all different city and states. The first few were in a low power car, you get your confidence up, I could keep control when you slip out on a round about... so then when they bump you up to the v8 undercover squad cars.. you think you know everything, and you keep thinking that, Oh... the cars sideways, I know how to handle this, the only time you realize that you dont... is when you are sitting in a tire wall and the cop next to you is shaking his head. I dont know what its like where you guys are, so I really cant talk for your areas, but here, in Townsville, I wouldnt want the majority of P platers here to have 130kW/T at their disposal. It doesnt matter how much you THINK you know, how many Courses you have done, real world experience is the only place to learn properly. I may be a hypocrite, I did have a TT when I was 17, and I thought I knew how to drive it to, I mean, I did all them courses, didnt stop me from loosing control on many occasions, and its only luck that I managed to keep in under control (even if I told my mates it was skill). So honestly, I recon it should be more like 90kW-100kW/Tonn, at least for the first couple of years, them maybe bump it up after. and get rid of all these useless exemptions, they are just loopholes. /argument Commence Flame War
99% of the time people loose control of a car is because they don't drive to the conditions or are driving too fast. The car is still irrelevant, the car doesn't make you do drifts around round-a-bouts. I agree, that even as a p plater it makes me cringe when I see people driving around in VS commodores, but it is all to do with how responsible the driver is. Maybe they should restrict based on suburbs and all of the 'gday mate' suburbs get a ban on their cars lol.

The problem with all these politicians and paper pushers is they can only operate in numbers and figures. They just need to sit down and qualitatively assess all cars based on power, weight, size, driven wheels, active and passive safety systems, and subjectively decide whether a kid is likely to collide with some piece of scenery. And in my opinion, a Ralliart is more than safe enough for a P plater to drive. They dont even have the power to break traction, and would hold on much longer than something else if thrown around in corners.
I agree to a point, but maybe set a separate Power to Weight depending on AWD/RWD, and other safety factors, it would be HIGHLY impractical to make a list of EVERY car in Australia for this reason... I wouldn't even want to imagine how big that list would be, and the amount of work it would take, and debate about what car goes into what category.

Well for starters there is no way they would be able to go over every car currently available on the market let alone that has been made in the past. By the time you took into account all the different models offering varying levels of safety features & all the different engine options, it would just be way too much work & cost stupidly large amounts of money.
Btw depending on how you drive the Ralliart there is more then enough power to break traction. I can launch mine & spin all four wheels off the line or slide the back around corners quite easily so if you don't know what your doing the Ralliart is just as unsafe as any other can, especially if you hit boost halfway through a wet corner...

Yes, in general you are correct, however, its the car to a point as well. When you are in a car, that can easily light up the back wheels, loose control around a corner etc, then you are more likely to do so. Basically, remove the temptation, and in most cases, you will solve the problem.
Why not make it so, if you want 130kW or more, you have to undergo a Defensive and Offensive driving courses, and PASS, then you are eligible to drive the more powerful cars, however, since we are now taking your word that you will be safe, if you break the rules, the penalties will be higher.
You said you don't want the power to break the laws, so this should be a problem right? but I bet no one agrees to it.

Got some Hancock Performance tyres on it atm, not sure which model but I was able to do it with the stock A10's as well. Granted I have to launch the car at about 7k RPM off the line to spin all four wheels but it can still be done. The rest of the time it just all relies on what gear your in & getting the correct weigh transfer etc

Have you been spying on my car... they are the exact same as what are on there now haha that might explain the lack of traction

What I don't understand is how falcons and commodores didn't make the ban list when they have the same size engine as na cars on the ban list, so I think if they are to change the restrictions commos and falcons will still be allowed even if they are the car that a majority of p-plater stats are done in

That all comes down to politics. It's a cheap (second hand & parts wise) Australian made car so there is no way they would ban it.

It was with the SST. Foot on brake, flick accelerator till it's about 6k & then floor it & release brake just after flooring it... All done in S Sport. No damage yet but I'm deff not doing it again any time soon. Think I got lucky with the SST considering how I treat it. But that's quite a bit off topic.
