@Quismiff Thanks for that. Good to know I've got a few options to go with in terms of tyres. I've read some tyres posts around here but without context of what type of ride they were going for, I didn't know which one would suit my needs.

I've found using 225/40R18 on my VRX the speedo is about 5% out, meaning while it says 100kph you'll be doing about 95kph. A nice margin so you shouldn't get any speeding fines if you follow the speedo reading.

If you have GPS then you can use it on the HWY to get closed to the real speed or just diver a few kph over.

The main season we use the 225/40 over the 215/45 is cost and the 215/45R18 is not a common tyre, only used on a couple of new cars sold in AU.

On stock 16" I find my speedo is about 4km/h out compared to my GPS.

Yeah fair enough.

BTW. Just looking around I find this one seems to be another option: 235/40R18. The options seem endless :)

I wouldn’t go 235/40 on the stock rims unless you’re akming for a plump looking wheel, the 225 would be just perfect

I dunno... 235/40/17 looks pretty good on mine. XXR rims and lowered if that makes any difference.

i think your rims are either 8 inch or 8.5 so they cover more of the rim compared to the stock 7 inch tyre, im running an 8 inch rim with 225/40 it looks sorta stretched, i wish i went 235 or 245

40 is the sidewall as a percentage of the width of the tyre, so 40% of 225 is a 90mm side wall, 45% of 215 is 97mm side wall
more here. You could go upto a 225/45 for a 101mm sidewall.

235/40 would be 94mm side wall. Why do you say it would look plump?

On a related note. The smaller the side wall, does this mean the bigger the gap between your tyres and the top of the wheel arch (haha. What's that part called?). Hence the need to lower the car?

Bulging over the rim he means, looking fat, not by much, but the standard rim is 7" on a VR-X or RalliArt, so a 9-1/4" tyre would hang over a little bit. even a 225mm tyre at almost 9" is going to look fatter than a standard tyre.

The maximum recommended Tyre width on a 7" rim is 225mm and 195mm being the narrowest.

There is the gap for noise and ventilation, the lower the car, the narrower the gap, the less the sound waves have to escape, which is why the front is larger than the rear, the rear being further away so less of a noise complaint. Also when the turning the wheel it allows for the change in the tyre angle so it doesn't hit or snag on the guard.

@Quismiff Thanks for the clarification. It's clearer now. I think I got all the information I need to make this happen.

Thanks everyone.

I'm finally on 18s. The difference the 18s (plus the strut bar) make on the ride is night and day. Love it. Can't help grinning from ear to ear.

Local tyre shop had an immaculate used set for $170. He said it came off a 2015 Lancer.

Good find $170 for a set (4 I assume) normally they cost about that each!

For most of us I think depending on the tyre you'll have more than enough grip around corners in the dry.

Yeahp. Pretty happy with 4 really good condition wheels for $170.

Really enjoying the extra grip around corners. Higher stability. And maybe take-off has improved too.
