After a fun filled day of installing a sound system in the es, we sat down with a beer and plugged in the battery...

that's when the fun began... after i plugged it in within seconds smoke arose from under the drivers seat. and also a loud noise

turns out dad had got two yellow wires mixed up for the rear divers side speakers. so that yellow line is fried.....

ill get a picture up soon.

any suggestions?

Speaker lines around the wrong way won't cause smoke. All that will do is put that speaker out of phase.

What amp, what gauge wiring, what fuse size under the bonnet?

If there was a short on the power cable then fuse would blow.

My guess us power supply in amp but really need to know what gear and what else was amp running.

Amateur hour much, I always ALWAYS triple check every single connection and cut I make before I go any where near the battery. Your not glueing on cheap ebay parts here it is a very real possibility that you could have set your car on fire or even bricked the entire electronics system if you shorted the car that well.

I see it all the time here people try things themselves and F#@% it up or do a S#$% poor job of it. Take your time, think about what you are doing and pay close attention to detail. Makes me scared about even considering buying a second hand car.

see it was a wire from the amp that was suppose to go to the rear speaker. but it was connected to another yellow cable that ran under the seat. that entire wire is fried

So u tapped into a wire that u don't know what it was? Always run fresh wiring to speakers from amps eliminate any chance of using wrong wires. Be glad u didnt put a charge into the airbag system.

As someone who installs stereos everyday I get 3 or 4 jobs a week of fixing up home jobs. We double what we would normally charge to install to compensate the time to sort out and clean up what's been done.

I thought the yellow wire under seat would have been the airbag system, is in my VRX

gotta say i have done a few installs now and never heard of any frying/smoke... but i guess if u destroyed the cable then its more than possible...
but for future reference you should never wire something up to an unknown cable, use something like a 9v battery or a test pen to see what speaker is which and to see the correct powers...
there should be some wiring diagrams out there as well mate, i wish i had the link but there is actually a site that will tell you every wire in any car and were it goes etc for all stereo items in your car.... but i lost it a year or two back, but simply check at each end of it, you should run new cable but sometimes its not always nessasary or easy to do... can be quiet fiddly in car door boots if you havent done it before....
either way it sounds like it could be your amp fuse, generally if you put power into the amp speaker lines the fuse will blow and melt.... thus giving u a plastic smell and can some times smoke... check the fuse on the amp, find out what the cable does and replace it.... check all your lines are correct and fix it up mate....
without seeing it i dont think anyone can really help as to yet.

Thats a bummer man! 1st time installs can be a bit nerve wracking.
im sure someone will come up with a wiring diagram for you. i found this, from mr charisma:
My aftermarket harness has:
Yellow - Constant 12V
Red - Acc 12V
Black - Ground
Orange - Illumination
Blue - Aerial
Blue / White - Remote Turn On
Green - Handbrake
Speaker wires ( white, grey, green, purple )

So long as the car starts, and runs, with no warnings, i'd say no terminal damage... I would recommend pulling all fuses related to the headunit/amps etc. you've installed, till the wiring is checked out with a multimeter though mate.

Good luck with it! and don't give up, home installs are extremely satisfying, i've done all my cars myself, and the music sounds sweeter when its your own work!

byran, thats generic aftermarket headunit wiring loom colours, not amplifier wiring going into factory wiring

thanks guys. all the electrics besides the rear door work fine. took the car into an auto elec to fix the power then to a audio fitter to fix the job.
i thought it was worth the shot

Cost more now then just going to pro fitter in first place lol
