Advice on which battery to choose.

Hey all

Still in progress of install new sound system, because my cj doesn't get as much a run as it should I've killed my batty.

Just wondering if anyone could reccommend a suitable battery for a 1200w amp and a 800 w amp, I was told dry cell is the way to go or just a standard battery.

Any tips or advice would be tops.

Go for a sealed lead acid battery like a Optima Yellowtop. It's a deep cycle battery and it also has a lower internal resistance so it's alot better for cars with sound systems.

Prices start around the $320-350 mark depending on where you shop.

EDIT: Also people like to call Yellowtops dry cells but technically speaking they aren't. They a sealed (ie. maintenance free) Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) battery with spiral plates that have an "absorbent glass matting" between them which makes the lead acid stay in place and not spill out so to speak.

Then there's also gel cells where the lead acid is mixed with a silica compound to "solidy" the acid and keep it also from spilling out.

Optima are good however a more cost effective battery would be one from a marine shop.

Go somewhere that sells boat batteries, the car audio guys used to buy from there for half the price of an optima.

Yeah I had an experience with Federal batteries not willing to replace my D34M. They tested it and said the voltage is down and it was not holding it's charge after only 3 months.

Basically they admitted it was faulty via email ( idiots ), told them fair trading takes a dim view on this...plus I was also lucky that I got it from FHRX Studio's who went into bat for me as well. Customer service from there is top notch and the battery was eventually replaced.

Guess it is not a once off.
