Help installing e-throttle controller (3-Drive flat)

Postby JaCe » Tue Dec 15, 2009 3:46 pm

Recently in Singapore I bought the Pivot 3-Drive Flat electronic throttle controller with the 6A PnP harness. Was wondering if anyone here has any advice on installing one of these.

Image

I figured out how to do the PnP harness behind the throttle but am in need of info on where exactly the OBD port is (the device draws power from here) and where's the best place to tap the reverse light signal (to send the 'cancel' to the device when reversing).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

For those curious, I paid $438SGD all up for device + harness cash and carry (and the old non-thin model retails for $398). This is a link to the old model from Pivot website for those who are wondering what I'm talking about > http://www.pivotracing.com/product/THR . The newer 'Flat' model which I purchased is on the Japanese website > http://pivotjp.com/product/thf_c/thf-e.html .

The OBD port is under the driver's side dash. You can see it without removing any panels or anything. I'll post a picture in a minute. If you are going to have this plugged in full time, you may want to relocate the OBD plug (2 screws) and face it into the dash, as otherwise the plug will stick down and hit your feet.

As for the reverse signal, I'll look it up and get back to you.

Here is the picture:

Looking up the diagrams now. You might be lucky and there may be the wire under the dash... if not, the loom runs down the side of the car, or where it plugs into the ETACS behind the glovebox

The plug is quite small so we'll see how easy it is to PnP.

All I need to do now is figure out the easiest way to tape the reverse signal. I'd imagine it's similar to when people install reverse parking sensors except it won't be in the boot.

(Note: I've also asked on EvolutionM since someone here found the wire: http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-x-audi ... ost7799820 )

Here is the wiring diagram for the reverse circuit.

Image

As you may be able to see, a positive 12v source for reverse light signal can be found in connector C-304 (terminal 2) or C-311 (terminal 2 also)

Where each connector connects to the ETACS is shown below :)

Hope that helps JaCe

Sorry for being really really noob, but where is this circuit located? Is this in the fuse box or something?

(first ever DIY!)

It's ok, plenty of noobs on here

Do you know how to remove your glovebox yet? Open glovebox, look on left hand side (outer) and you'll see a shock-absorber thingo. ubclip that off the glovebox door. Then depress in the sides of the glovebox and lower the glovebox. Take it down low enough and the lower hinge unclips. Then you will see the fusebox/ETACS there :D

That picture is the fusebox/ETACS ECU outline and it shows where each connector is.

The connector you want is C-311 and the wire is located in terminal 2. The terminal numbers are indicated from looking from where the wires come from. So looking at the connector from where the wires are, terminal 2 is the 2nd from the left on the first row in this picture below:

Image

However, as you can see in the ETACS ECU picture, the connector is upside down. So terminal 2 is now 2nd from the right on the bottom row of connector C-11 which is the large lower connector on the ETACS ECU. I can't tell the colour from my diagrams, but my car's colour is White with silver dots.

Any further questions, feel free to ask, don't be shy!

Thanks for the info. I think I'll wait until the weekend when I'm nice and relaxed with plenty of light (rather than night time) and I'll give it a go.

Cheers

LOL I'd like to at least have some understanding and try it myself.. with him as backup :) Can't become too reliant on him! But he did offer to install so I'll probably take him up on this but use the info from this forum to help him figure it out.

For those who don't know Tim, he's a mate of infinite and me.

Yep same thing but I think Pivot pride themselves on everything being plug and play (PnP).

Did you install one already? Any help/info/guidance on how you got the reverse signal. So far I've definitely got OBD port fine (it's easy to find), the throttle cable for the harness should be easy... I saw a bit of fabric covering the area where the throttle is- would've gone deeper but my legs were burning (it's 40 degrees in Sydney today) so I thought I'd wait until the weekend when it's a bit cooler to look around.

As for the Blitz... My understanding is that Blitz required tapping into power as well as reverse signal whereas the Pivot goes one step further and just uses the OBD (a bit of a waste) for power so it is plug and play out of the package unless you want the reverse-cancel.

The reverse cancel is an extra harness for the blitz which I didn't bother with

All installed now. Thanks to ej20i from Edge-Racing for installing. Basically within the bootlid, pulled off the wiring and used a volt meter to confirm the WHITE CABLE is the reverse light for the Evo X. Used this to send a current and wired this neatly around through the battery compartment in the boot, out of the gap between the leather seat and the right hand side rear door (remember the Evo seats are fixed and don't fold down), wired this all the way to the front and into the Plug and play harness which connects up with the 3Drive. It was nicely mounted on the dash.

Thanks also to everyone here for your help and advice. I'll do a full write up on this as a review once I'm more used to it but so far I've found the economy mode really does work but it significantly can dull performance of the Evo X. On the other hand, sports mode really does improve the urgency of the car!
