Hi,

Have a 2008 lancer and tonigh it would not start. when i try to start the car it makes a clicking noise under the bonnet and the lcd screen flickers. Im guessing one of two things.... flat battery or as i tried to start it with a flat spair key im thinkiing maybe immobiliser.... has anyone had this prob? any ideas?

Couple of questions...

1. Did the car start with the spare key ok?
2. Did you try replacing the battery in the keys?

It sounds like either a flat battery in the car, or in the key to meat this stage.

Ok, sounds to me like the car's battery is flat.

If you have a multimeter, check it and see what the voltage is.

Disconnect it from the car, and put it on charge overnight. The battery shouldn't be dead as the CJs aren't really old enough yet. But it could be a dud. Give it a charge and see how it goes.

If after charging the battery the car does not start, then we can go further :)

Edit: Hi Daniel, it's Adrian :P

True, but they can and do go flat still.

I had my radio on the other day while I was drying my car and other things and I'm fairly sure it switched it's self off because I sure as heck didn't.

Haven't had probs with the CJ, but had cars before that have shown same probs. Could be the solenoid in the starter motor. The fact it was clicking means that some power is getting to it. Maybe not enough (flat battery) or not channeling directly through the circuit to the starter motor.

Hope its just the battery flat. Much simpler and less expensive.

I actually drained the battery on my CJ when i first got my stereo installed on it. Stupid me ran the amp really high for ages.

At this point i had an aftermarket alarm installed, so when i unlocked the car the next day, the alarm thought someone had disconnected the battery (because it was so low) and the alarm was making all wierd dying noises as the alarm backup battery died rofl.

Also, with changing the battery on the keys, not sure if it applies to the CJ, but when my mum replaced the battery on her fiesta keys, they no longer worked, and had to get ford to re assign them to the car. I havnt had to replace the battery for the keys in the lancer, because i have a seperate remote for it...Does anyone know if the keys have to be re-assigned to the car if the battery is changed?

I had this same problem in my '96 Magna.

Both keys would not work, immobiliser turned off though but it had a clicking noise and that's it.

Swapped out batteries and same issue, i couldn't figure out what it was!
The car hadn't been run in over 3-4 months though as I had my CJ and maybe started once or twice in that time.

I was threatened by the council that if I didn't move the car they would fine me for it aswell, so the wreckers got it the next day, not sure what the problem was though, sorry.

When the ignition is switched to ON, there is 5 or 6 quick little clicks. That is normal.

LCD screen flickering means car battery flat. Even though the CJs aren't that old if the dealer didn't take proper care when it was in the yard the battery will die quicker.
