Camping Equip

What's everyone's thoughts for loading up camping equipment?
I'm not a fan of roof racks (well, if they have to be permanently attached) - because they look ugly and when you load tents etc and drive at 100ks, the fabrics can tear (i've seen tarps get torn to shreds just because of the wind velocity).
Don't really want to tow the stuff, it's light. Can't really fit it in the boot with all the other crap that needs to come (like air mattresses, the big esky).
What other options are there?!

Motel....roof racks with a box or a trailer are the only option really.

I know this might be a bit late but I just took a interstate road trip for almost 4 weeks over 10,000km and we just used onsite cabins and motels. Also stayed with some relatives along the way, easy way for a free bed and meal. We were planning to take a tent and stuff as backup but didn't bother. Depending on how many people you need to support maybe a roof top pod but they cost a bit, but probably cheaper than a trailer.
Really depends if the aim is to go camping or if the camping is just a place to stay along the way.
BTW we also took a couple of blow up mattresses, picnic basket, a small esky and some basic bedding, which came in handy on cold nights. take what you need but not too much.
The CJ didn't miss a beat, happily doing 110 all day long!

If I needed the extra space, and not enough to warrant towing a trailer then the roof pod is the best option, probably wouldn't hurt the fuel economy as much as a trailer either, but they don't come cheap.

Hunt around and you would be surprised what you can find. I found this on a Christmas special a few years ago for approximately $300
I found it in Sydney. And freight was less then $100.
Fuel economy wise, from memory on the highway it added less then 1 litre of fuel to the 100 Kay's traveling.
