Brand new member looking for advice

Postby Miggy » Mon Sep 28, 2009 10:49 am

Hi All

The Names Danny, orded my new 09 VRX CVT Sedan in Lightening blue on Friday. And now I have a 7 - 10 days wait for delivery, which is lucky because I was told there was only one available in Oz in my disired spec: lighteningblue, Rockford fostgate upgrade, CVT, front Window tints etc. otherwise it would be a 5 - 6 week wait.

I've recently moved to Sydney from Perth, and before that I grew up in the U.K. This will be the second Mitsubishi I have owned, back in the U.K I had an Evo 8 FQ320 which I loved, but I must admit I'm looking forward to owning a NA car again.

At this point I'm not looking to make any engine mods, but I'm definitely looking to make some minor exterior mods, and while browsing through ClubCJ I'm loving what some of you guys have done to the front ends of your Lancers, it deffo makes them look more aggressive and purpoesful.

Which brings me on to my first question:

1. Wheres the best place to buy the front bumber blackout vinyl? is it a trip to my local dealer/parts supplier, or are there better after market versions available?? and is it difficult to fit???

2. I think the chrome trim some of you have fitted around the bumper grill also looks great. is it a difficult job to do, and how long would you say it would take from start to finish??

Any other newbie specific advice would be most appreciated.

I look forward to getting to know some of you once the modding bug takes hold of me once again

Miggy.

Hi welcome to ClubCJ!!!

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the OEM Dealer blackout. It is rubbish!! Go to a local signwriter and they may even have an offcut suitable.

The chrome trim from what I understand is quite simple as long as you take your time. I haven't done it myself but am looking at doing my lower grille soon.

Any other questions just fire away :D

welcome miggy!

i just did that front end mod myself a couple of days ago. the chrome trim is amazingly simple to do. i had help from my brother but all up sticking on the chrome took about 5 mins. just have to be careful to make sure the length used is just right otherwise the chrome wont meet up flush at the join (if you're making a full circle that is). if it's too long the join will 'buckle' either towards the middle of the circle or towards the outside. but if its too short then it wont meet up at all and you will end up with a gap.

as for the vinyl step i struggled terribly with that so i'll let someone better share advice :P

Welcome Miggy!!

With the bumper blackout, check out your local sign writers shop and pick up about 1-1.5m of Matte Black Automotive vinyl. As long as though you take your time applying the bumper blackout and your remove as many bubbles as possible when doing it you will be fine.

And with the chrome accent trim. Fairly simple mod. You dont have to trim it to size before you put it on...Here are a few steps to get you going..

1. Make sure the area around the bumper is clean from all dirt and grease.

2. Start from the center bottom of your grill and securely fit the adhesive to the bumper

3. Once you get to a corner, bend the chrome trim before you attach it to the car. ie, when you get to the corner, dont apply it, just bend it till its sorta the shape of the corner.

4. Once you have that bit bent, apply the chrome FLAT. If you dont, the adhesive will come off after a while and the chrome around the edges wont stick any more. Its highly unlikley that you will get it perfectly flat, but as long as though most of the adhesive sticks to the bumper you will be right.

5. Do this all round your bumper till you get to the join at the bottom. This part, Overlap the chrome pieces and leave a little extra when you trim the excess.

6. Mark on the bit thats overhanging where you need to cut it to join the 2 pieces together and cut it off so you get a nice flush finish on the 2 chrome pieces.

7. Go back over all your corners and flat parts to make sure the adhesive is sticking properly and your done!!

Hope that helped you out. If you got any more questions POST EM UP!!!
